Gathering Audience Feedback for Evaluations

In order to gather both qualitative and quantitative date for my evaluation, I have created a questionnaire for my music video. When carrying out this piece of research I will make sure that I gather opinions from a wide variety of sources as well as my peers. I will show the entire video to the participant and then ask them to answer the questions honestly. From this I will draw up mulitple conclusions, such as enjoyability factor, what was good about the video and what could be improved etc.

I will also be carrying out interviews with people that will be voice recorded and filmed in interview style in order to produce a more interesting viewing experience. These interviews will be based on my ancilaries, and I will use them as evaluation points as I will be able to gain a greater perspective on how good/bad they are. I will also be showing these participants the video so they can understand the song genre and the artist, which is useful when it comes to judging the ancilaries because they have to connect in some why.

Sixth Draft

Fifth Draft

Changing the Performance

From audience feedback we decided that we wanted to change our performance shots within our music video. The fifth draft performance came across static and unemetional which pulled our overall video quality down. We needed to change the performer to make our video seem as realistic as possible, focusing more on energy and enjoyment. Star image is so important within music videos as you are trying to sell the artist therefore they need to display tones of personality, so they are seen as likeable to the audience. In order to improve our performance aspect we shot the actor a total of three times, running through the entire sone each time so we had enough footage to work with. We did a close up, a mid shot with a guitar (to sell that artists image) and a close/mid shot of the actor dancing, which I think really added character to the performance aspect. The costume and setting was kept the same because we liked the contrast the black background and white t-shirt created as it really made the artist stand out and worked well the seperate the narrative in our video. Overall, I am very happy with how the new performance turned out, however my only concern is that the guitar isn't actually being played properly which could stand out to some viewers.

Adding Performance

From my third draft feedback, I agree that the video was slightly lack lustre and perhaps missing a key feature that would make my video appear more professional and realistic. Therefore as a group we decided to film some performance for our video, filming the actor in the video in front of a black screen, wearing a white t-shirt so that he stands out and creates his star image. We are going to film two seperate takes of this, one as a closeup and a mid shot with the actor standing the the left of the frame. This is so that the performance doesn't start to become repetitive because the changing angles will help to create diversity.

Third Draft Edit

Editing Experience

Our editing experience ran smoothly from the start as we knew what direction we wanted to go in. So we started editing the Highfields shots in our storyboard order, and slowed them down to fit in with the pace of the music. We used the razor tool to cut out sections that weren't needed and linked some of the shots together with transitions such as cross dissolves and fade, in order to make the video flow. However, when watching the first section of the video back, we found that the narrative was a bit slow and some of the shot were too long, so we added some jump cuts on beat to make the video more choppy and interesting. I especially like the scene where the actors are walking down a path framed with trees, and they move further up the path on each beat.

In our next editing session we started to add the garden scenes, pulling together the two locations in order to make the video flow seamlessly throughout. In order to do this, we used a fade to black transition to make it clear to the audience that this was another chapter in the actors relationship, which I think worked quite well with how we wanted the narrative to progress. One of my favourite editing techniques was changing the opacity of clips to create a layered effect. We simply when to the edit icon and slid the opacity to 50% to make two different shots appear over the top of each other. My personal favourite was the layering of the time lapse and the performance at the very end of the video, because I feel like it pulled together the narrative of relationships moving on, with the artists personal experiences. This makes it easier for the audience to related to the artist and create a connecting with their music.

Filming Experience

We carried out filming over a span of two days. The first day was located at Highfields park where the majority of the romance narrative would take place. Initially the filming was trial and error, because it was difficult to find the best and lighting and we had to change some of our shot plans as when we arrived at the location we found better alternative shot opportunities. We also found new, surprise locations that we hadn't planned but worked really well with the video and so decided to improvise and take some shots. Surprisingly, we ended up using a lot of these locations in the final video because they added more depth into the narrative about the best times in relationships. One of my favourite shots that wasn't planned, was the shot with the actors sitting on a bench under a tree that framed the shot as they looked out to the lake. I think that it rounded up everything that the music video was about, love and youth. We made sure to take multiple shots of each scene, so that when we came to edit, there would be at least one perfect one. This definitely paid off because we had to discard some footage due to accidental camera movement or lack of focus.

The second location was filmed in my garden because we wanted a casual and relaxed location to create verisimilitude. Prior to filming we decorated the set with props such as fairy lights, drinks and chess, which really made the shots come to life. The filming ran smoothly from the beginning because we were already used to using the camera, so focusing and having the correct camera settings on wasn't a problem. However, we started to loose light quickly because filming took longer than expected, so the final shots looked slightly grainy because we didn't have any lighting equipment as originally we were filming in broad daylight. Therefore, in order to make sure that we had some decent footage we took several shots, which was beneficial as some of the shots looked better quality when uploaded to Premiere Pro. I think my favourite shot that was filmed in the garden was the dance scene, where the male actor spins around the female actor whilst they are laughing. This was my favourite shot because it was completely unplanned, but created an amazing effect that captured the essence of the story we were trying to create.

Making a Record Company Logo

I wanted to make my own recording company logo to put on my digipak and magazine instead of using the Atlantic Records logo. For this, I used Adobe Illustrator and came up with a few simple designs that would look good when scaled down. Firstly I had to decide on a name for my record label and ended up landing on the name Maze Records, which I am happy with and think compliments my chosen artist because it isn' too pop related and isn't too rock related. Hence having the perfect balance. I also think that 'maze' is intriguing and interesting creating a sense of ambiguity around the type of music that would be on the label, which I like.

Adobe Illustrator was very easy to use and it didnt take long for me to create a simple yet effective logo. From the picture above you can see that I used the spray tool to add patterns onto the original design to add interest. I looked through the symbol list and found loads of contempory patterns that would look good with the design. The one above especially worked well with the music theme as the speckled dots give a speaker or amp appearance as well as creating an edgy style.

I ended up with two different designs to pick from, eventhough very similar, I ended up choosing the left because I liked the symbol placement better and think that it will work the best for mmy logo as it is more striking.

New Digipak Draft

New Magazine Advert Draft

Changing my Magazine and Digipak Idea

As I wasn't happy with my initial Digipak and Magazine Ad due to my Double Exposure not working as well as I wanted it to, I decided to start again with some images that I already had and with some new ones that I have recently taken. I thought that it would be a good idea to use some of my bokeh filter shots as we were unable to use them in the video and didn't want the idea to be forgotten about. So I gathered some of my practice images that I thought would work well with my new images and started to create a new draft.

I am planning on reworking my magazine ad because Im not overall happy with the end result as it doesnt fit in very well with my digipak and is a little plain.

Digipak Draft

My initial draft for my digipak. I need to work on the front pannel of the digipak still as it doesnt work well with the rest of the pannels.
